SAFELY USING YOUR PYREX® GLASSWARE

Pyrex® glassware is designed to be as versatile as it is long lasting. You can use it to prepare, store, cook, bake, warm or reheat food—in pre-heated conventional and convection ovens, or in microwaves. And cleanup is easy – just place your Pyrex® glassware in the dishwasher. As with any glass product, there are a few common-sense precautions to keep in mind for your safety when using Pyrex® glassware. Your safety is important to us, so please read the guidance below. If you don’t use Pyrex® glassware in a way that is consistent with this guidance, it could break and cause injury.

Be sure to read the entire safety and usage instructions accompanying your Pyrex® glassware before use:

Avoid Hard Knocks

While Pyrex® glass is heat strengthened, through a thermal tempering process, to be durable and long-lasting, Pyrex® glassware-- any glass products, for that matter--can break if it’s dropped, knocked against a hard surface, or struck with a hard utensil—so handle your Pyrex® glassware with care. If a piece of Pyrex® glassware does become chipped, cracked or scratched, don’t use it, as its strength may be compromised and it could break or shatter (even long after a chip or crack appears).

And if you do break a piece of Pyrex® glassware, use thick gloves and a great deal of caution cleaning the broken glass, as pieces can be extremely sharp and be widely spread from the point of breakage.

Protect Your Hands from Burning

Of course glassware gets extremely hot in both conventional and microwave ovens, so use protective pot-holders to handle heated glass--don’t ever touch the hot glass with your bare hands, or allow it to come into contact with your body. Keep hot glass well out of children’s reach.

Don’t Subject Glass to Sudden Temperature Changes or Direct Heat Sources

Uneven heating, direct contact with heating elements, and sudden temperature changes (hot glassware coming in contact with something cool or wet, or cold glassware coming in contact with something very hot) can cause glass to shatter or break. To avoid this, follow these precautions:

  • Always preheat your oven before placing your Pyrex® dish inside it. While the glass is designed for temperatures typically used in baking, it can break when exposed to the direct heat element while the oven is preheating.
  • Do not use Pyrex® glassware on the stovetop (open flame, electric burner), under the broiler, in a toaster oven, or on a barbecue grill. This type of usage exposes Pyrex® glassware to potentially damaging direct heat sources.
  • Before cooking items that may release liquid (including fat, food juices, or moisture from frozen foods) in your Pyrex® glassware, add a small amount of liquid to cover the bottom of the dish before you put it in the oven. This serves to minimize any potential sudden temperature change that may occur as the food releases liquid. Once a Pyrex® dish is already hot, do not add liquid to it (for example, by basting with liquid not already in the dish). Adding liquid to hot glass may compromise the product’s strength, potentially resulting in breakage.
  • Avoid placing a hot Pyrex® dish directly on a countertop or wet, cool or metal surface. Place it on a dry cloth or potholder, or on a wooden trivet or cooling rack.
  • Allow Pyrex to come to room temperature before immersing in water or placing in the freezer, refrigerator, microwave or pre-heated oven.
  • Don’t use Pyrex to microwave popcorn or heat foods in browning wrappers. Microwavable popcorn bags and browning wrappers are specially designed to concentrate heat in targeted spots, and may damage the glass.
  • Don’t heat empty or nearly empty glass containers in the microware. When heating oil or butter in the microwave, heat only for the minimal time required—don’t overheat.

Easy Care

  • Pyrex® glassware plastic lids are BPA free. They are safe for use in the microwave and for food storage. Pyrex® lids cannot be placed in conventional or convection ovens (because they’ll melt), unless specifically noted on the package that they are designed for oven use (as with Pyrex® Ultimate Storage silicone and glass lids).
  • Pyrex® glassware and lids are dishwasher safe, making cleanup easy and carefree. Keep both plastic lids and glassware away from direct heat elements in the dishwasher.
  • When washing Pyrex® glassware by hand, use non-abrasive cleansers. To remove baked-on foods, soak the dish and use a plastic or nylon cleaning pad if scouring is needed.

Detailed Care Instructions

USE & CARE
Before reading the Use & Care instructions, please check packaging for component parts included with your purchase.

OVENWARE & GLASS COVERS

USE

  • PYREX ovenware can go directly from refrigerator or freezer to a microwave, convection, or preheated conventional oven. Add a small amount of liquid to the ovenware vessel prior to baking foods that release liquids while cooking.
  • Add a small amount of liquid to the ovenware vessel prior to baking foods that release liquids while cooking.
  • Oven must be preheated before inserting glassware.

CARE

  • To loosen baked-on food, allow glass to cool, then soak. If scouring is necessary, use only plastic or nylon cleaning pads with nonabrasive cleansers.

SAFETY
See OVENWARE, GLASSWARE, PARTS/ ACCESSORIES SAFETY (below).
PLASTIC COVERS

USE

  • Microwave oven, refrigerator, and freezer. Wash cover before first use. Condensation may develop on underside of cover. Remove cover with care. Allow dish and cover to defrost 15 minutes after freezer storage. To prevent permanent stains and blisters, AVOID REHEATING foods high in oil, fat, sugar or tomatoes. DO NOT overfill dish.
  • Plastic covers are for microwave and storage use only, and are BPA free

FOR PLASTIC COVERS WITH VENT TABS

  • For better sealing results, install cover with vent open. To minimize leaking, dripping and ensure proper seating or sealing of cover to dish, exert downward pressure at dish rim when applying cover. Once cover is in position depress center lightly and hold to evacuate excess air, close vent.
  • Open vent (lift) for microwave use. Make sure vent tab is closed during transportation and storage. DO NOT overfill container. Deluxe vented storage covers fit on bottom for easy store/stack nesting. For ease of fit, open vent when applying cover to bottom of dish.

CARE

  • Wash by hand or in dishwasher top rack only. To minimize staining on plastic covers, wash immediately with warm soapy water.

FOR PLASTIC COVERS WITH VENT TABS

  • Clean vent tab by pressing tab out of cover from underside.

SAFETY
See OVENWARE, GLASSWARE, PARTS/ ACCESSORIES SAFETY (below).
THERMAL PACKS

USE

  • Heat the “HOT PACK” in microwave oven according to times listed on pack. Heating times may vary, depending on the wattage of your microwave oven. When the maximum time has elapsed, or pack starts to expand, TURN OFF the microwave. If pack expanded during use, check to make sure it is not leaking.
  • Place the “HOT PACK” in the “hot pack pouch” and place in bottom of serving basket. Never use “HOT PACK” without the pouch.

CARE

  • Clean with a sponge or cloth using soap and hot water. Make sure the “HOT PACK” is completely cooled. To prevent mildew, wipe dry before storing.

SAFETY
See OVENWARE, GLASSWARE, PARTS/ ACCESSORIES SAFETY (below).
BASKETS

CARE

  • To clean, wipe with a slightly damp, soapy cloth. Dry with paper towels. DO NOT IMMERSE IN WATER. Should basket become wet, place appropriate PYREX dish in basket, place on protected surface and allow to dry completely. Use only a dry basket on tablecloth or table. To remove food from crevices, gently scrub with a soft brush. Baskets are for serving purposes only.

SAFETY
See OVENWARE, GLASSWARE, PARTS/ ACCESSORIES SAFETY (below).
OTHER SERVING ACCESSORIES

PYREX OVENWARE, GLASSWARE, PARTS/ ACCESSORIES

SAFETY

  • As with all glass products, you must exercise an appropriate degree of care, especially when cooking food at high temperatures. There are three primary risks associated with using glassware for cooking: (1) breakage due to a sudden temperature change applied to the glassware; (2) breakage due to impact if the glassware is dropped or knocked against a hard object; and (3) burning when handling hot bakeware.

Failure to follow these instructions can cause breakage resulting in injury or property damage, or may cause your glassware to break or shatter immediately or later.

  • NEVER USE on or under a flame or other direct heat source, including on a stove top, under a broiler, on a grill or in a toaster oven.
  • AVOID SUDDEN TEMPERATURE CHANGES and DO NOT hot glassware; place hot glassware on a wet or cool surface, directly on countertop or metal surface, or in sink; or handle hot glassware with wet cloth. Allow hot glassware to cool on a cooling rack, potholder or dry cloth. Be sure to allow hot glassware to cool as provided above before washing, refrigerating or freezing.
  • Avoid handling hot glassware (including ware with silicone gripping surfaces) without dry potholders.
  • DO NOT use in microwave to hold or support popcorn bags, microwave convenience foods with special browning wrappers, etc.
  • DO NOT use to pop corn, caramelize sugar, or deep fat fry.
  • DO NOT overheat oil or butter in microwave. Use minimum amount of cooking time.
  • Handling your glassware without an appropriate degree of care could result in breakage, chipping, cracking or severe scratching. DO NOT use or repair any glassware that is chipped, cracked or severely scratched.
  • DO NOT drop or hit glassware against a hard object or strike utensils against it.
  • Be careful when handling broken glass because pieces may be extremely sharp and difficult to locate.
  • DO NOT use accessories in oven or microwave, under broiler, or on top of stove unless otherwise indicated on item.
  • Use caution when placing plastic cover on dish and removing plastic cover from dish. When removing cover, direct steam away from you.
  • DO NOT use plastic cover in convection, toaster or conventional oven.
  • DO NOT HEAT "HOT PACK" CONTINOUSLY in microwave longer than the MAXIMUM times listed on the pack. Stop heating immediately if pack expands.
  • DO NOT USE THERMAL PACK in conventional, toaster or convection oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine or dryer. DO NOT BOIL THERMAL PACK.
  • “HOT PACK” will become HOT when heating: Use potholders.
  • IMMEDIATELY DISCARD thermal pack that is punctured, or has a split or damaged seam. DO NOT ATTEMPT to repair or continue to use. AVOID EYE CONTACT AND DO NOT INGEST liquid contained in thermal pack.
  • KEEP THERMAL PACKS OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.
  • Thermal packs are NOT FOR USE on any part of body or for any use other than described in these Use & Care instructions.
