Ride-on Suitcases

Ride-on suitcases are one of the most popular travel gadgets ever made for children, and are sold in their millions each year. Kids love them, and parents love them! Why? Because they solve some of the hassles experienced when travelling with small children.

Riding through the big airports on a ride-on suitcase is a fun experience for kids, and solves that part of the journey in a positive way. And since most ride on suitcases are made within hand luggage dimensions, the kids are able to bring their favourite items on-board.

But what about the part of the journey that you spend in the air? For many parents, the real hassle about traveling starts when entering the aircraft. The children usually get tired and exhausted during the flight, and many of them need their sleep. However, the sleeping opportunities for children on-board most aircrafts are very limited.

FAQ

1. What is BedBox®?

BedBox® is the ultimate travel gadget for children from 0 years, all the way up to 6-7 years. It is your child´s hand luggage, ride-on suitcase and inflight bed, in the very same box.

2. What about the safety when used in "bedmode" during flight?

BedBox® is developed by a former aircraft engineer, pilot, parents and frequent travellers, in cooperation with one of the best design agencies in Norway. It is designed with safety and comfort in mind, and can be used during the cruise portion of the flight. It shall not be used during taxi, take-off, landing or turbulence.

3. Is it difficult to use?

No. It is easily set up in a few seconds, by following the simple instructions under the lid. It is also very easy to stow away before landing.

4. Is BedBox® FAA/EASA/CASA approved?

The bed feature of BedBox® does not require a specific approval from the aviation authorities since it is not intended for use during taxi, take-off, turbulence or landing. It is a premium hand luggage-dimensioned ride-on suitcase designed to make the travel experience better and more comfortable, and the bed feature should only be used during the cruise portion of the flight. BedBox® is developed by a former aircraft engineer, pilot, parents and frequent travellers, in cooperation with one of the best design agencies in Norway.

The FAA (US), EASA (Europe) and CASA (Australia), all base their regulations on ICAO guidelines so that most of the regulations are standardised. BedBox conforms to all these regulations as long as it´s limitations are respected. These limitations also applies to other products like e.g. FlyeBaby, which is a very popular product for the smallest infants, as well as most baby bassinets which is provided by some airlines. The baby bassinets provided by some airlines will on the other hand be subject to a specific approval since it is a part of the aircraft inventory, but that is another story.

With the BedBox®, we wanted to create a unique product that is stylish, universal, easy to manoeuvre and fun to ride. And of course with a patented bed feature that can also be used for children that has outgrown other sleeping aids available on-board

5. Can the BedBox® be used on any seat?

BedBox® should preferably be used on window seats on single aisle aircrafts. If flying on wide-body aircrafts with twin aisle, it should preferably be used on either window seats, or on the middle seats, if sitting in the middle row, between the aisles.

 6. Can the BedBox® be used during turbulence which requires passengers to be seated with seat belt fastened? (Seatbelt sign ON)

No, just like most baby bassinets that you will find on some limited number of aircrafts, it should not be used during turbulence.

7. Can BedBox® be used on other than air travels?

Yes. Feel free to use it as you like. Like on the train for example.

8. What is the maximum length and weight for use in "bedmode"?

The weight of the child is evenly distributed between the seat and the BedBox®, but weight should not be above 30kg in "bedmode". The most limiting factor will be the length of the child. Some airlines have better seat pitch than others. Seat pitch is usually between 82-90 cm.  As a flat bed, the BedBox® can still be used up to the child is approximately 100 – 110 cm, as most children will curl up a little, and comfortably sleep on their side. However, as a comfortable “Business Class Seat”, it can be used up to the child is approximately  120-130cm.

9. What should I do when my child has outgrown the flat bed-feature, but still need to sleep?

Older kids need to sleep on-board airplanes as well. A good tip for a more comfortable sleeping position for the older kids is to use the BedBox® as a comfortable footrest, and thereby convert the regular economy class seat into a Business Class seat. Turn the lid around, and adjust it to the proper height to allow the child to rest their feet.  This, in combination with a reclined seatback, is very comfortable for a child that doesn’t reach the floor with their feet. Although not “First Class”, still “Business Class”

10. Is there enough space for other items in the suitcase?

Yes, the mattress does not take up much volume, so there is plenty of space for other favourite items as well. The total capacity of the BedBox® is 20 litres.

11. In which direction should the child lay down?

If used as a flat bed, facing backwards allows you to have the seatbelt up under the armpits and over the chest of the child, although this is not a requirement during the cruise portion of the flight.

12. What happens with the child´s head if the seat in front is reclined and the child´s head is facing forward?

This is will not be a problem, since the platform height of the bed is so low, and close to the rotation/hinge point of the backrest of the seat in front.

13. Does the bed-feature require the child to have its own seat?

BedBox® is at it´s best if used in a separate seat. If you travel with infants under 2 years old that don't have their own seat, we recommend asking staff at check-in or gate if there are any available seats on-board. Our experience is that families with small children are prioritized on these seats. However, our customers have reported that it is possible to use the BedBox® between two seats, with armrest in the upward position. This is most likely to be successful if done between an adult and another child.

14. Can the BedBox® be used on bulkhead seats? (Without a seat in front)

The BedBox® is primarily designed to be used between two seat rows, as this will give better support and stability. However, as a “Business Class” seat, we know many people have used it successfully on bulkhead seats as well.

Have not really try it yet, But my kid love to sit and play around at home.

Review by Dian on March 3, 2018

We travel often and mostly on long haul trips, so it is important that our boy sleeps comfortably. We are able to fit a pillow, some toys and books in the suitcase. It is easy to manoeuvre around and very durable. Will definitely recommend this!

Review by Bella on January 3, 2018
